 Goechala Trek Sikkim

The Trek That Takes You To The Third Highest Mountain Of The Word

Sikkim, India's northeastern state, is endowed with natural beauty, from snow-capped mountains to sprawling greens and bubbling brooks. The East Himalayan state has a variety of treks, the most well-known of which is the Goechala trek.

The grand views of the big mountains that you see are the main reason to do the Goechala trek. Not only do you see the Kanchenjunga, but also 14 other major peaks. That's a lot for any trek, let alone one as close to the eyes as the Goechala trek. It's no surprise that trekkers consider Goechala to be the closest to Nepal's big mountain treks.

Before we get into the specifics of the Goechala trek, let's take a look at why it's so popular among trekkers all over the world: While the trail to Goechala is centuries old, it wasn't always so well-known. The transformation occurred during the Nepalese Civil War, which lasted from 1996 to 2006.

During this time, Nepal was closed to trekkers due to political unrest. Trekking to the world's highest mountains was suddenly out of the question. It was a huge setback for the trekkers, who scrambled to find alternatives.

Goechala emerged as the closest solace at the time. The trail promised a brilliant close-up of the world's third-highest mountain as well as breathtaking views of the Singalila range from the summit.

Aside from the breathtaking views, this trek is quite popular and well-liked by most visitors due to the diverse flora and fauna found in the flourishing lavish valleys with wonderful orchards, dense forests, and the widespread charismatic and alluring beauty of the North. This area is designated as the Kanchenjunga National Park, and there is a gushing Goceha lake flowing downwards along with the vertex.

Trekkers usually witness one of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets of their lives while trekking the pass, with snow-capped the massive Himalayas surrounding them, and the gifted view of sixteen attractive peaks from the Dzongri top is one of a kind experience.

The state sees an influx of tourists during the summer and autumn seasons, which are considered ideal for the Goechala Trek. The trek promises to take you above 15000 feet and give you a view of the mighty Kanchenjunga and 16 other summits from the top of Dzongri La. Aside from the mountain peaks, you can gaze upon the lavish valleys neatly tucked between these mountain ranges, which are home to a variety of floras and faunas. Highlights of Goechala Trek

Dense jungle at 12,000 feet

At such a high altitude, there are very few treks with treelines. When compared to treks in Uttarakhand or Himachal Pradesh, the tree line is around 10,000 feet. However, not on this trek through Kanchenjunga National Park. And I thought that was exceptional. This is also one of the best Himalayan treks for birding.

Especially the dense canopy of Rhododendron trees, which bloom in the misty spring and become dark and cold in the autumn. The Goechala trek's beautiful wooden-log trails. Photographer: Sachin Jha

Three suspension bridges

These suspension bridges will take you across three deep gorges – Pha Khola, Tshushay Khola, and Mentogang Khola – through which the Prekchu river flows. The sudden appearance of the bridges surprised me. And looking down into the deep gorge from these suspension bridges is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A monastery at Tsokha

On the second day, this occurs. You're almost at 9,500 feet now, and there's a monastery nearby! Do you believe it?

The monastery is not located in Tsokha. You must follow the trail that leads out of the campsite and cross a wooden bridge over a pond. It's such a tranquil setting. I've always thought of mountains as a place to meditate. So I was overjoyed to discover this monastery tucked into the Goechala trek.

Dramatic changes in the scene

The first route connects Tsokha and Dzongri. The trail begins by meandering through rhododendron and pine trees. However, upon reaching Phedang, the dense forest cover abruptly gives way to a barren landscape. The transformation is startling.

Another notable change in scenery is the transition from Kokchurang to Thansing. The Prekchu river, which you had seen flowing deep in the gorges, cuts through the jungle abruptly here. Yes, you've joined the river.

And it adds a mystical atmosphere to the setting. The sudden change in scenery, with a wooden bridge crossing the river, was unexpected.

First sunrise on Kanchendzonga from Dzongri Top

This is your acclimatization day, and you will spend it at Dzongri. Wake up at 4.30 a.m. and head to Dzongri top at 13,778 ft. It's a difficult ascent. But it's well worth it.

I'll never forget the first time I saw the morning rays illuminate Mt. Kanchenjunga. As the morning progresses, the mountain's colour changes. Dzongri top also provides a panoramic view. It was a completely different sensation. It was an unforgettable sight that I will never forget. At dawn, the Kanchenjunga is bathed in orange light. Photographer: Ashish Bhatt

Camping at the foot of Pandim

Thansing is the trek's most picturesque campsite. It's a desolate meadow on Prekchu's riverbed. It also lends itself to a one-of-a-kind experience. At Thansing, I pitched my tent right next to Prekchu, at the foot of Mt. Pandim. Sitting next to the river and staring at Mt Pandim for long periods of time was a truly magical experience for me.

A perfect challenge for endurance

I've always preferred treks that put my endurance to the test. And Goechala does it brilliantly. This trek covers 65.7 kilometres in 10 days. And that, too, with a significant ascent. Although the trails are well-maintained here, the altitude gain and long days put your endurance to the test.

The sunrise on Kanchendzonga from ViewPoint 1

Finally, my favourite trek memory begins with waking up at 1 a.m. for ViewPoint 1. I was initially irritated by the unusually early start time. However, once we arrived at ViewPoint 1, everything changed.

Seeing the first rays of sunlight fall on Kanchenjunga is an ethereal experience. It casts a magical light on the world's third-highest mountain, as well as others. I was completely enthralled. My eyes welled up with tears as I stood there taking in the magnificent sight.

Then, on the way back, I noticed the lovely Samiti lake. The lake, with its deep turquoise waters, was the ideal way to end the summit day.
