Many of our magnificent treks in the region begin and end in the pasture uplands of Uttarakhand's alpine heights. These are the Bugyals, fecund grassy uplands are hidden away in mountain laps where shepherds take their herds in the summer before the winter snows turn them fallow. Dayara is a lesser-known Bugyal that can be reached from Uttarkashi via a short, crisp trek, but it pays off handsomely.

Dayara Bugyal in Uttarkashi district is an enthralling trekking locale, with mixed forests of oak, pines, walnut, maples, and rhododendrons, trails running through meadows of Bakaria Top and Dayara Bugyal, and the colossal Gangotri range with the imposing Bandarpoonch inviting you in an open embrace. The misty mornings of Dayara Bugyal provide the most spectacular backdrops.

Another highlight of the journey occurs on the fourth day when we ascend to 12,100 feet from our Dayara campsite to Dayara Top. A ridge walk leads to the confluence of several adjoining meadows, including the Giddara Bugyal. There is also a decent trail to Dodital, a freshwater lake that is the source of the Assi Ganga. On this stretch, the summer meadows are infused with a spray of yellow wildflowers. The snow-thatched Bandarpoonch will leave an iridescent imprint on all of this paradisiacal effervescence. The path descends to Barsu, a charming village known for its silkenly flowing buckwheat fields and poppy beds. Before arriving in the village, we make one last stop at Barnala, a small crystal waterhole flanked by a Nag Devata temple.

Dayara is a circular plot of land in the local language, reflecting the hoop-shaped grassy turf of this Bugyal, surrounded by dark oak and maple woods, and beyond the green reaches, a glowing snowline of the Bandarpoonch and other ranges. A leisurely stroll through Dayara's undulating pastures will take you out of the world frames of its green ecosystem, the whispering wilderness of the oak woods, and somewhere far away, a breathless peak view panorama gradually unfolding.. Throughout the stretch, you can catch glimpses of the Gangotri set of peaks, Srikanth peak, Bandarpoonch, and Black Peak at various junctures.

Dayara Bugyal trek's gradual ascents (barring a few tricky ascents) and relatively easy descents are ideal for beginners.
