Set amidst the lush green background of the Shivalik hill ranges on Jakhoo Hill, the highest point in Shimla, the Jakhu Temple is an ancient site dedicated to the Hindu god - Hanuman. Jakhu Temple has the world's largest Hanuman statue, which is visible from most parts of Shimla.
Overlooking the
sister town of Sanjauli, the amazing setting of Jakhoo Temple in the thick of
beautiful Deodar trees is complemented with an abundant monkey population in
and around the Jakhoo Hill area. It is located approximately 2 kilometres from
the Ridge in Shimla's centre, a journey of about 30 minutes. The construction
of the Hanuman Statue is a marvellous piece of engineering as it is situated at
the height of over 8000 feet, making it the tallest statue in the world at such
a height above sea level, surpassing Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio De
Janeiro which is 30 meters tall (excluding its pedestal of 8 meters), at the
height of 700 meters (2,300 feet). According to the legend that surrounds Jakhu
Temple, Lord Hanuman stopped at this spot to take some rest before resuming his
search for the Sanjeevani Booti to revive Lord Lakshman.

rested for a while during his journey to bring the Sanjeevani Booti for
Lakshman’s revival during the war of Lanka.
The
Kalka-Shimla train ride is a highpoint of Shimla tourism and for a good reason.
Built in 1898, this narrow-gauge railway has recently been added to the
mountain railways of India World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Winding through the
extremely scenic and mountainous route from the Shivalik Range foothills at
Kalka (Haryana) to Shimla, the train ride offers spectacular views of the
surrounding hills and villages. On the way, it stops at a number of tourist
destinations, like Solan, Dharampur, Summer Hill, Salogra, Taradevi, and Barog,
among others. The ride will take you through no less than 864 bridges, 919
curves, and 102 tunnels. The train ride in itself may not count as a ‘place’ to
visit in the region, but missing the ride means missing out on some of the
splendid sights that Shimla has to offer.
The Kalka to
Shimla route is best travelled by way of the toy train that runs on a
narrow-gauge track and is known for its dramatic views of the hills and
surrounding villages. The historic Kalka Shimla Toy train is part of the UNESCO
World Heritage List and takes individuals on a ride amongst vast green hills
and deodar and pine forests.
The journey was
carved through the abundance of nature in Himachal Pradesh during the British
rule due to which the Kalka Shimla Toy toy train is bound to take you back to a
completely different era in history and through one of the most scenic railway
journeys in India. The 5 and a half-hour toy train journey provides special
services and is must-do when visiting the mountainside of the North.
Nestled
within the Glen Forests, Chadwick Waterfall is one of the most delightful
sights that nature has bestowed upon Shimla. The waterfall makes a dive from a
height of 86 meters and cascades down a huge gorge. Surrounded by a blanket of
greenery formed by the deodar and pine trees, it presents an enticing sight.
The best time to visit it is during monsoons (from June to September) when the
water level increases and Chadwick seems to take on a life of its own. If you
are not daunted by the idea of taking a dip in the cold waters, you can go
ahead and splash around.
Chadwick Falls is
located in the Glen Forests of the beautiful city of Shimla. This stream of
water trickles from a height of about 100 metres. Some explorers recall a walk
through the forest as an adventurous experience because of the damp and dark
environment created by the thick canopying forest.
The name Chadwick
is derived from 'Chidku Jhaar' where 'Chidku' means sparrow and 'Jhaar'
means waterfall in the local language. It was named so because the locals
thought only sparrows could reach the top of the waterfall and not humans. The
Britishers found it difficult to pronounce this name and hence started calling
the waterfall Chadwick. Some say a scientist named Chadwick committed suicide
here, and therefore, it is called so. No matter what the origin of the name is,
this beautiful location is a stone's throw away from the city and must be
visited by everyone exploring Shimla.
